6 Ways to Refresh Your Space This Spring
While I wish I was writing to you about my favorite seasonal markets and the best way to make Aperol Spritzes for a crowd, I'm just as thrilled to share some tips for refreshing, renewing, and reorganizing your home. After all, a calm, clean space is so important for your mental, physical, and emotional health. All of which need the utmost attention in a time like this.
1. SET UP A MINI OFFICE

Keeping your work and home life separate is difficult under any circumstances... but it gets especially tricky when you're legally required to stay in one place. Typing away in bed can be great for a few days, but studies show it can really affect your sleep. I find it's best to keep your laptop away from the bedroom, so designate somewhere else (your living room, your dining room... maybe not your bathroom) as a work station, and keep the rest of your house as a sanctuary reserved for exercising, relaxing, and of course, sleeping!
2. DO A (REALLY, REALLY) DEEP CLEAN
Time to take spring cleaning seriously. Since I'm physically inside my house for 72 hours at a time, I'm really running out of excuses to avoid cleaning under the sink. Now's your chance to take a good look at every inch of your home and make sure it sparkles. Since cleaning passes the time and gets me active, I think this is the first year I'm actually looking forward to it!
3. DEFINE YOUR SPACE WITH A NEW SCENT
I've always been passionate about fragrance. Before I started my own company, I had dozens of diffusers and probably made one too many candles on my bedside table. Once I started discovering more sophisticated, calming scents, I found that even my little basement apartment felt refreshing. Bringing peace to your space is so important for your mental health, and it's easy to feel relaxed when you're living room smells like fresh lavender.
4. START A KITCHEN SCRAP GARDEN
It's no secret that plants bring peace and joy to a room, so why not grow your own! Even with no gardening experience you can replant herbs and veggies like scallions, mushrooms, basil, and avocados. It's a perfect way to bring some green to your windowsill while also saving you a trip to the supermarket. There are tons of tutorials online, so check them out and get growing!
5. IF IT DOESN'T HAVE A SPACE, GIVE IT ONE
Want the secret to a tidy home? Baskets. Boxes. Cubbies. Out of sight, out of mind. A clear space will give you a clear mind, but cramming everything into a closet definitely isn't the solution. If you're someone who hates to fold blankets and struggles to keep everything on your coffee table in an organized row, then get some nice containers and drawers. It's so easy to keep my living room cute when I can toss our throw into a chic wicker basket and keep the remote in a side table drawer. Consider ordering some storage containers or cute boxes from local businesses that might need your help right now.
6. SPRUCE UP YOUR DECOR WHILE SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS
Buying art livens up your walls and helps express your style. Buying art also helps local artists afford things like food, rent, and other basic requirements they need to live. Right now, a lot of self employed creatives are really struggling to make ends meet, so if you can afford it, order some pieces from local artists and designers. Etsy's always a good place to start, but also try reaching out to local shops and studios that might need your help.
Let's all stand together (while still social distancing ourselves,) in these stressful weeks. Take some personal time to clear and enhance your space, then spread joy to your fellow man. Go ahead and share this post to any one who could use a little freshening up right about now.
